Program Notes
“Smruti” is a Sanskrit word that means memory, or that which is remembered. Bharatanatyam has been a part of my dance experience for as long as I can remember. My earliest memories are those of my mother recollecting her Bharatanatyam dance training and performances. Her enduring passion for this rich classical dance form kindled my interest at an early age. The compositions in this program are rooted in a collection of memories that have brought me resilience and joy in my artistic practice; from re-engaging with inspiring learning processes, to recollecting nostalgic childhood memories. Smruti evokes precious relationships - from wearing my mother's costume to discovering my personal connection with traditional Bharatanatyam repertoire, these works have challenged me to explore a deeper understanding of the aesthetic underpinning as well as the possible innovations within the tradition. The memories associated with each of these presentations tonight, have allowed me to reflect and reminisce on my artistic journey.
